“I was in a relatively remote location some distance from Darwin, recently in December. I decided to photograph these old car wrecks at dawn, which I did on two successive dawns. I planned to leave late on the following day, but had no firm plans; the location I wanted to get to was at least 300km away and I doubted whether I’d be able to find it late at night. I drove about 40km down the road, and stopped to take photographs of a pretty pink coloured eucalypt at sunset. When I was busy taking photographs, a volley of gunfire erupted from further down the road. A farmer no doubt trying to pick off some helpless wallabies… but I wasn’t sure. Anyway I decided for various reasons that I probably should head back to where I came from and subsequently I spent a further unplanned night in this locale. I decided to photograph these old cars at dawn yet again. I already had a large number of photographs of the cars, but the skies on the previous two mornings were a bit dull and lifeless…. the sky on this third morning was much more interesting; so I have decided to use this image.”
